A man is captured for reasons he does not know and is imprisoned in a single room for 15 years. One day he is released and meets his captor. He has 5 days to find out why he was imprisoned.
This is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen. It's so poetic its practically a Shakespearean story put to film, and equally as tragic. EVERYONE needs to see this film once in their life. I don't want to say that much cause I'd hate to give anything away, but if the trailer piques your interest even in the slightest go out and see this movie NOW. I haven't met one person who hasn't loved this film :|
To make this more discussable, discuss Oldboy (if you've seen it) and other Asian cinema

Hmmm. Depends what you're into. But here are some of my personal favorites...
All About Lily Chou Chou- Considered one of Tarantino's favorite films. Some of the most beautiful cinematography ever set to a Debussy heavy soundtrack. A kind of commentary on Japanese youth, technology and idol worship. A coming of age story about a group of high school kids who worship a musician named Lily Chou Chou to escape the pressures of life...
If you're into Lynch, Cronenberg or altogether bizarre or experimental film you'll definitely like works by Shinya Tsukamoto such as Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Takashi Miike is one of the more well known Japanese directors, check out:
Audition- First of all, don't read anything about this movie. It's best to go in with no prior knowledge besides that it's about a widower who's friend helps him hold a fake audition to find a new girl. It's one of the most daunting "horror" films ever and has one of the most gruesome endings ever. Personally I hate the Ring, The Grudge, etc. The originals are pretty much as bad as the remakes... Audition is basically a Hitchcock movie. Perfect storytelling and perfect build-up to create an atmosphere that is very horrific
Gozu- Like Mulholland Drive on acid
Happiness of the Katakuris- Best feel good movie ever. It's part musical, part zombie horror, part comedy... really every genre possible
And lastly, Wong Kar Wai is a really well know director. Another Tarantino favorite. Check out 2046, Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love.
Other films worth checking out: Battle Royale Suicide Club Last Life in The Universe (one of my favorites...) Pulse Shutter Three Extremes

What site is this? And yeah, the hammer scene is one of the most epic movie scenes ever made. I can't believe that was one continuous shot with no CGI added (except the thing sticking in Oh Dae-Su's back...)

The CGI is really bad. It's gore, but it's pretty cheesy gore in my opinion :/ Either way I still really enjoy the movie (it is a Miike film of course...) The soundtrack is awesome too. Visitor Q is even more taboo (nice strip club ref) than Ichi if that floats your boat.

I second this
Takeshi Kitano is another really good Japanese director...
A lot of people might know him from doing game shows and comedy, but he also directs some really serious movies

It came out in 2003. You should buy the Deluxe edition of it, so worth it. And if you buy it on Amazon it's not that much more expensive than the normal version.
However, you will technically get to see it in America soon. Because apparently they're making a remake of it with fucking Russel Crowe -_____-

Yeah, everything besides Shutter, Pulse and Battle Royale
I don't think any of those are really worth buying except for the latter

Why does everything good in the world have to be ruined?!
I'll start saying that I just found out that yes.. a hollywood director and popular actor are planning on making a remake of oldboy. The good news is its not Russell Crowe...
So who is it?? Who could remake a movie like this??? I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't seen it.. but there are some really extreme parts in the movie (Garret I assume you know what I'm talking about) It would take a cool director to do it well
Well the answer is the plan is for steven spielberg to direct and will smith to star in the lead role..
Will pursuit of fucking happiness Smith is going to play Dae Su... This movie doesn't work as a shitty mainstream movie are they just gonna get rid of half the plot?
There is no way this will be anything but terrible. Anyone who's seen oldboy knows this will be shit
